BVNA hosts career zone to advise current and aspiring nurses

A range of lectures and resources for those working, or aspiring to work, in the veterinary nursing profession, will be available at Crufts 2014.

Hosted by the BVNA, the veterinary nurse engagement area will be held in the career zone, offering a range of lectures including "What can you learn from health and safety in a veterinary practice?", which will be presented by Alison Clarke, veterinary nurse and BVNA Congress steward co-ordinator.

Advice, resources and education will also be made available by the BVNA, for the benefit of veterinary nurses, as well as those already working in the field.

In addition, dog legislation officer for the Association of Chief Police Officers, Keith Evans, will provide a unique insight into canine legislation - a vital subject for those working with dogs.

Dog behaviourists and trainers can also look forward to lectures on setting up a gun dog training class, dog evolution and clicker training.

Working with the Kennel Club Accredited Instructor Scheme (KCAI), veterinary nurses and surgeons from Purina PRO PLAN will form part of an expert panel, offering one-to-one nutritional advice to canine professionals.

This year's Crufts is set to take place from March 6 to 9 at the NEC in Birmingham. To register for the KCAI career zone, complete the booking form here.

BBC Radio 4 documentary addresses corporate fees

BBC Radio 4's File on 4 Investigates has released a documentary exploring how corporate-owned veterinary practices may be inflating bills to increase profit.

Released on 15 April, 'What's Happening To Your Vet Bills?' revealed the policies which many corporate groups have in place to increase their profits. This included targets and upgrades which veterinary teams are tasked with meeting on a regular basis.

It also features Anrich Vets, an independently-owned practice based in Wigan. Following the case of Staffordshire terrier Benjy, who is diagnosed with a tumour, the documentary shares how the team were able to offer contextualised care and advice to make the procedure as affordable as possible for his owners.

The documentary can be heard on demand on BBC iPlayer.
