SPVS Snowscene Deadline Draws Near
CPD event will take place in Austrian Alps in 2012.

The Society of Practicing Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) Snowscene 2012 event is running low on available places due to high demand. This year's event in Hotel Steiner of Obertauern in the Austrian Alps has been so well subscribed that all available flights out of Manchester have been exhausted and only flights out of Gatwick remain. Anyone wishing to attend must register by January 5th, so the SPVS has advised that anyone hoping to attend should book as soon as possible.

This year's event in Hotel Steiner, a luxury 4-star hotel with access to 100km of Alpine pistes, will include fifteen hours of CPD and the opportunity to socialise with many fellow Veterinary Surgeons. It is hoped than those attending will benefit from the thoughts of Mike Guilliard on “Old Chestnuts and Hot Topics in Small Animal Orthopaedics” and Peter Gripper's recommendations on “How to have your cake and eat it”.

The event will run from 10th March to 17th March 2012, and a full list of prices and features of the event are available on the SPVS website. The booking form is available here

Bluetongue reaches Wales for first time in 2025

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has revealed that bluetongue has been confirmed in Wales for the first time in 2025.

In their latest statistics, APHA records a total of 109 cases of BTV-3 or BTV-8 in Great Britain in the 2025-2026 vector season.

The total number of BTV-3 cases in Great Britain this season is 107. This includes 103 cases within the England restricted zone and four cases in Wales.

There has also been two cases of BTV-8, which were both in Cornwall.

As a result of the cases in Wales, a Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) is enforced in Monmouthshire. Animals can move freely under general license within the England Restricted Zone, however animals with suspected bluetongue must stay on their holding.

All premises testing positive for blue tongue can be viewed on this map.
