RSPCA announces new pledges
Long-term welfare efforts announced

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has announced 5 long-term objectives for reforms to the nation's animal welfare standards. The RSPCA have committed themselves to:
  • Increasing the proportion of UK farm animals reared in higher welfare systems.
  • Ending the overpopulation of companion animals and tackle related issues.
  • Reducing the number of exotic animals kept as pets and increase their humane care.
  • Ending euthanasia of any rehomeable animal.
  • Reducing the number of animals in the UK who undergo severe suffering when used in experiments.
Commenting on the announcement, new Chief Executive Gavin Grant said “These pledges are bold but they’re achievable...Whether it’s just spending an extra few pence on higher welfare food, or giving an animal a loving new home, everyone can play their part.”

More information on the pledges is available at the RSPCA's pledges website

RCVS members invited to question Council candidates

RCVS members have been invited to submit questions to candidates for this year's RCVS Council election.

With 15 candidates standing for three available positions, vets have been invited to submit a question of their choosing before voting starts. These questions will be collated, with each candidate answering one question of their choice.

It is recommended that members read the candidates' biographies and statements before submitting questions. One question per member can be submitted to vetvote26@rcvs.org.uk before Wednesday, 25 February 2026.

The RCVS Council election is due to start in March.

With only two candidates for two positions on the VN Council, there will be no VN Council elections this year. Meghan Conroy RVN and Lauren Hargrave RVN will begin their three year terms at RCVS' AGM in July.
