£20k donation to fund new puppy

Pfizer Animal Health has donated £20,000 to the charity Hounds for Heroes, which provides assistance dogs to servicemen and women of the British Armed Forces and civilian Emergency Services who are injured or disabled. The donation is to be devoted to the acquisition and training of a new puppy, to be named 'Vanguard', which will join the charity's Squadron Two prior to being paired with an injured or disabled person.

Allen Parton, a veteran of the Gulf War who founded the charity in 2010, and his assistance dog EJ were presented the cheque by Pfizer Animal Health's Area Veterinary Manager Jonny Lambert. Commenting, Mr Parton said "The mental and physical help provided by a trained assistance dog cannot be over-egged, EJ's predecessor, Endal, literally saved my life. There are currently more than 900,000 injured men and women in the country today and if money were no object we would ensure that every single one of them had access to a Hounds for Heroes dog. While that's not currently possible, with the support of Pfizer we are one step further."

Hounds for Heroes has been designated Pfizer Animal Health's charitable partner for 2012. If you would like more information about Hounds for Heroes, please visit www.houndsforheroes.com

GBGB veterinary director Simon Gower, said "While rare, Leptospirosis is a serious infectious disease that can affect both dogs and humans, so it is vital that we offer our greyhounds the broadest possible protection.
