Investigation continues into disgraced vet
RCVS investigation ongoing following Court conviction

The RCVS has confirmed that its own investigation is ongoing into the case of veterinary surgeon Dr Ohene-Gyan, following his sentencing to 21 weeks in custody and a lifetime ban on owning or keeping animals for breaches of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Dr Ohene-Gyan was convicted by Reading Magistrates’ Court in relation to animals that were under his care, and sentenced on 11 July 2012.  The charges included failure to treat and care for animals appropriately, causing them unnecessary suffering.

Dr Ohene-Gyan, who qualified in Hungary, currently remains on the RCVS Register, as the RCVS has no power of interim suspension.

RCVS Acting Registrar Gordon Hockey said: “We have been carrying out a parallel investigation, and Dr Ohene-Gyan’s case will be considered by our Preliminary Investigation Committee shortly.”

New form for online veterinary medicines retailers

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has produced a new online form for retailers wishing to sell veterinary medicines on the internet.

The form replace the previous Word version and is part of the VMD's ongoing commitment to digitise its processes. Anyone retailing prescription medicines online, including POM-V, POM-VPS and NFA-VPS categories, is lawfully required to register with the VMD before trading.

The change only applies to new applicants. Retailers already listed on the VMD's Register of Online Retailers or registered under the Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme (AIRS) do not need to do anything.
