Introduction to UK veterinary profession
A course will be run for vets from overseas

The BVA, the RCVS and the VDS are joining forces to help introduce vets from overseas to practising in the UK.

A comprehensive two day course - entitled 'Introduction to the UK veterinary profession - an essential CPD course for overseas vets' - targets overseas vets in their first two years in the UK, and those considering working here, and aims to provide all the necessary information and support they require to practise as a veterinary surgeon in the UK.

The three organisations would like to reduce the risk that practising vets from overseas might become the subject of a complain, as well as improve their UK experience and advance their communication skills. The course will also explore the legal duties of a UK veterinary surgeon - something which can vary significantly between countries.

RCVS President Jacqui Molyneux said: “Each year we register around 600 overseas graduates – around 40-45% of our total new members. We appreciate that working in a foreign country can have its challenges – and that regulatory structures and professional expectations can change in different countries – not to mention language and cultural barriers.

“We hope that this two-day course will help overseas graduates to better understand the professional framework in the UK, improving their confidence and ability to deliver an excellent service to their clients and their animals.”

The course will run on the 27th and 28th November 2012. More information can be found here.

RCVS annual renewal fee for vets due

RCVS' annual renewal fee for veterinary surgeons is now due. Vets must pay their renewal fee before Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

This year's standard annual fee has increased to 431 from last year's 418. This is an approximately three per cent increase, as approved by RCVS Council and the Privy Council.

Tshidi Gardner, RCVS treasurer, said: "The small fee increase will be used to help deliver both our everyday activities and our new ambitious Strategic Plan, which includes aims such as achieving new legislation, reviewing the Codes of Professional Conduct and supporting guidance, and continuing to support the professions through activities such as the Mind Matters Initiative, RCVS Academy and career development."

A full breakdown of the new fees is on the RCVS website. Information about tax relief is available on the UK government website.
