VPMA/SPVS congress begins
Successful start for first joint congress

The first ever joint VPMA/SPVS congress has got off to a fantastic start today. The bad weather has not deterred anyone, with over 300 people attending the event. The networking began last night with a pre-congress wine tasting and dinner.

This morning, SPVS president Gudrun Ravetz opened the congress, speaking of the collaboration between SPVS and VPMA, and their mutual passion for helping to make the veterinary world a better place. VPMA president Pauline Graham then came on to speak about her time as president, and the wonderfully successful year that the VPMA has had.

Delegates then warmly welcomed keynote speaker, and olympic gold medallist Andrew Triggs Hodge. He shared with us the story of his most recent achievement, winning a gold medal in the summer. He discussed the essential importance of teamwork in achieving goals, something which the delegates here today can apply to their own work.

The day has been packed with fantastic and informative lectures, on topics including managing cash flow, confronting difficult behaviour and how to successfully use social media in the practice. A wide variety of exhibitors included the premier providers to the veterinary industry, offering everything from practice management systems to pet insurance.

As Gudrun said at the start of the congress, there truly is something for the whole team here, be it managers, vets or nurses. With such a variety of exhibitors, speakers and attendees, this event provides not only a fantastic opportunity to learn, but is also an ideal place to network with like-minded people.

Over 400 people will attend tonight's social event, which includes a sparkling drinks reception, dinner and awards ceremony. Another fantastic day of lectures and networking is planned for tomorrow.

RCVS annual renewal fee for vets due

RCVS' annual renewal fee for veterinary surgeons is now due. Vets must pay their renewal fee before Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

This year's standard annual fee has increased to 431 from last year's 418. This is an approximately three per cent increase, as approved by RCVS Council and the Privy Council.

Tshidi Gardner, RCVS treasurer, said: "The small fee increase will be used to help deliver both our everyday activities and our new ambitious Strategic Plan, which includes aims such as achieving new legislation, reviewing the Codes of Professional Conduct and supporting guidance, and continuing to support the professions through activities such as the Mind Matters Initiative, RCVS Academy and career development."

A full breakdown of the new fees is on the RCVS website. Information about tax relief is available on the UK government website.
