The Vaccinations Group (VGG) of the WSAVA, chaired by Professor Michael Day, has visited India as part of its two year project to advise veterinarians on the Asian continent on optimal vaccination practice. During the visit, the VGG team met veterinary practitioners, vaccine manufacturers and government representatives in Delhi and Mumbai, as well as visiting six practices. A key focus on the subcontinent is the control of canine rabies virus which members discussed with Major General Kharb, Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India and Dr Nalinika Obeyesekere, a practitioner from Colombo and founder of the Blue Paw Trust.

Farmed puppies rescued
Two men have been arrested after suspicions that they were taking 36 puppies to the UK from Republic of Ireland puppy farms. Officers from the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) took the puppies into quarantine and secure accommodation, where they are being treated. The puppies will not be available for new homes until DSPCA inspectors have concluded their investigations.

The TV vet will be talking about the devastating issue of puppy farming, in support of Pup Aid, and will be accompanied by three rescued ex-puppy farm breeding bitches. The event is free to attend.

Sheila Voas has officially been appointed Scotland's new chief veterinary officer (CVO). The Edinburgh graduate has been acting CVO since June last year, and was deputy CVO prior to this. Mrs Voas says it is an honour to be appointed, having spent much of her career in the profession in Scotland.

A Welsh farmer has been made an Associate of the Royal Agricultural Societies in recognition of his work towards a bovine TB solution. Stephen Jones, who runs a farm on the Pembrokeshire-Carmarthenshire border, has lost nearly 200 cattle due to TB since 1993, including 40 animals in a single year. As a result he has closely studied the problem of TB, badgers and the prevalence of the disease on his farm for two decades.

Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA) has been detected in Germany. Cologne Racecourse has been placed under strict quarantine after one of the horses stabled there tested positive for the condition. Also known as swamp fever, EIA is easily passed on and can cause mares to abort their foals, as well as sudden death. There is a quarantine period of 90 days.

The Institute for Animal Health (IAH) is to be renamed The Pirbright Institute, as of 4th October 2012. IAH explained: "We are creating a state-of-the-art Institute on a single campus at Pirbright, Surrey, UK. The Institute will continue to carry out its world-leading surveillance and research into virus diseases of livestock and viruses that spread from animals to humans. It will have the facilities and expertise to meet the known and emerging virus threats of the 21st century."

The latest DEFRA/AHT/BEVA equine quarterly disease surveillance report is ready now. The report covers the period April to June 2012, and has been uploaded onto the Animal Health Trust website, accessible here. It has been revealed that the North-East of Scotland is now home to more than 100 exotic animals, following a freedom of information request. More than 100 animals are being kept under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act, including a western diamond back rattlesnake and several types of wild cat, including 45 Bengal cats, two Serval cats, two Ocelots and one Savannah cat.

The Kennel Club has produced three new films to help tackle puppy farming and impulse puppy buying, in the hope it will help ensure potential puppy buyers have not only considered the responsibilities of taking on a dog, but also that they pick a breed which will suit their lifestyle. One of the films also helps new owners find a responsible breeder. The videos came about after a survey, carried out as part of Puppy Awareness Week, revealed that almost one in five people said their prime motivator for buying a dog was the way if looked.
