EIA blog

Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA) has been detected in Germany. Cologne Racecourse has been placed under strict quarantine after one of the horses stabled there tested positive for the condition. Also known as swamp fever, EIA is easily passed on and can cause mares to abort their foals, as well as sudden death. There is a quarantine period of 90 days.
RVC open evening

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) will be running an open evening for members of the public in London. The event, called RVC Late, will run from 6.45-10pm on 18 October at the school's Camden campus. Participants can learn and take part in fun scientific demonstrations throughout the evening. The Institute for Animal Health (IAH) is to be renamed The Pirbright Institute, as of 4th October 2012. IAH explained: "We are creating a state-of-the-art Institute on a single campus at Pirbright, Surrey, UK. The Institute will continue to carry out its world-leading surveillance and research into virus diseases of livestock and viruses that spread from animals to humans. It will have the facilities and expertise to meet the known and emerging virus threats of the 21st century."

The latest DEFRA/AHT/BEVA equine quarterly disease surveillance report is ready now. The report covers the period April to June 2012, and has been uploaded onto the Animal Health Trust website, accessible here. All reports produced to date are available online, and Defra, AHT and BEVA are keen for more equine vets to get involved in the scheme. To register your interest, click here.
BVBA upcoming seminar

The British Veterinary Behaviour Association's (BVBA) seminar, The Pet-friendly Practice, is taking place next month. The seminar will give practical advice on improving handling and reducing stress in veterinary patients for all professionals working within the veterinary clinic, and will be held at the University of Nottingham on Saturday 13 October 2012. BVBA is an affiliated group of the BSAVA.

It has been revealed that the North-East of Scotland is now home to more than 100 exotic animals, following a freedom of information request. More than 100 animals are being kept under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act, including a western diamond back rattlesnake and several types of wild cat, including 45 Bengal cats, two Serval cats, two Ocelots and one Savannah cat.

The Kennel Club has produced three new films to help tackle puppy farming and impulse puppy buying, in the hope it will help ensure potential puppy buyers have not only considered the responsibilities of taking on a dog, but also that they pick a breed which will suit their lifestyle. One of the films also helps new owners find a responsible breeder. The videos came about after a survey, carried out as part of Puppy Awareness Week, revealed that almost one in five people said their prime motivator for buying a dog was the way if looked. Veterinary education to feature on TV

The University of Liverpool's School of Veterinary Science, along with veterinary staff and students, is set to feature in a new television series to be shown on Channel 5 this autumn, which will get 'to the emotional heart of what it is to be a vet'. In the programme - entitled 'Rolf's Animal Clinic' - Rolf Harris will follow staff and students as they undertake their daily work dealing with medical emergencies and treating the injuries and diseases of a wide variety of animal partients. Professor Susan Dawson, Head of the University's School of Veterinary Science, said: "We were delighted with the opportunity to open our doors to Channel 5 and were pleased to provide an insight into both our clinical work and the fantastic learning experience we offer to our student vets."
Team Onswitch cycle 900 miles!

The Onswitch team are nearing their destination as their 900 mile cycle relay continues. Team Onswitch are cycling a non-stop relay from Alness to Brighton in aid of Medical Detection Dogs. Having set off from Alness on Monday 10th, the team are aiming to reach Brighton tomorrow, on Thursday 13th September. Along the way, they are hoping to stop at 20 veterinary clients. The Animal Health Trust's Annual Review for 2011 is now available to download online. The review gives details of the work carried out by the AHT, and the theme for the latest review is 'progress', reflecting in the work carried out in infectious disease research, such as SCI and Strangles, through to clinical research into cancer, eye surgery and hydrotherapy. Brittany King, a veterinary graduate, has successfully swam the English Channel to raise money for Banfield Charitable Trust, helping those who face veterinary emergencies. Brittany studied at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and graduated from Grenada's St George's University School of Veterinary Medicine earlier this year. The 21-mile crossing took her just under 14 hours in temperatures as low as 15 degrees Celsius.
NAVC Videos

Presentation videos from this year's North American Veterinary Congress (NAVC) are now available online. The congress took place in Florida, USA, in January. Lectures were led by global experts, including exotics specialist Professor Steve Divers, neurologist Professor Rick Le Couteur and international medicine specialist Professor Michael Schaer.
