Rosie Allister VBF
Rosie Allister has joined the Veterinary Benevolent Fund (VBF) board as a new director. Rosie is as a locum at a small animal practice and has a history of welfare work within the veterinary industry. She has also raised money for VBF in the past. Rosie said she was looking forward to working more closely with the charity to provide effective assistance for vulnerable vets.

Kennel Club gives 60,000 to dog assistance charities
The Kennel Club Charitable Trust is awarding more than £60,000 to seven assistant dog charities during the run up to the Paralympic Games this summer. The trust is celebrating the work of many assistance dogs that have helped to give the athletes the confidence to go for gold.

Greyhound charity walk
A greyhound rescue charity has organised a sponsored walk for greyhounds and their owners in order to raise money and hopefully break a world record in the process. The 1,000 Greyhounds event, organised by The Greyhound Sanctuary, will take place at Escot Park in Devon on September 9th and will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the "largest single breed dog walk".

Oldest panda in captivity dies
The oldest panda in captivity has died at the age of 34. Bao Bao lived at the Berlin Zoo in West Germany and was gifted to them by China in 1980. The cause of death is currently unknown, although they reported the panda's condition had declined in recent months. The zoo plans to perform an autopsy.

Blue Cross launches dog walker scheme
The Blue Cross charity has launched a new community scheme to help people who are unable to walk their dogs. Trained volunteers are now on hand to help clients of their London hospitals who are elderly or disabled and therefore struggle to give their dogs the exercise they need.

A pet education campaign, 'Total Pet Health Month 2012', has been launched this month, aiming to improve the health and welfare of dogs and cats. The campaign, which began on 13th August 2012, focuses on a range of pet health problems offering advice and guidance to owners with a central theme of encouraging them to speak to their vet if they have any concerns about their pet.

TB found in cattle in Scotland
The Scottish Government have confirmed that an outbreak of TB has been identified in an abattoir and testing is now underway. Cattle from a dairy herd in Dumfriesshire are being slaughtered after testing positive for the disease; however, at this time, it is not possible to say how many animals were affected.

GALVmed appoints new chief executive
The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed) has appointed Professor Peter Wells as their new chief executive. He served as interim chief executive officer of the charity for six months from November last year and now succeeds Shadrack Moephuli in his new role.

The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund will be hosting their annual conference at the headquarters of Wood Green, the Animals Charity, in Cambridgeshire on Saturday 1st September 2012. There will be two streams - a vet stream and an owners stream - with 7 hours of certified CPD available for vets and veterinary nurses. Masterclass workshops with rabbit experts and lectures will be taking place throughout the day, and the facilities at Wood Green will make the day more hands-on and practical than ever before. Congratulations to Heather Armstrong, the founder of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust, who has been awarded an honorary degree from the Royal Veterinary College. The charity, set up in 2002, aims to help Gambian farmers look after their equines more effectively, which has involved teaching basic stable management, training local vets, farriers, harness makers and cart makers. The Honorary Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery was awarded in recognition of the outstanding service that Heather has provided in both animal and humanitarian welfare in Gambia.

Harper Adams University College has been shortlisted for a 2012 Green Gown award. The awards acknowledge sustainability initiatives by UK universities, colleges and others in the learning and skills sector. Harper Adams is in the 'continuous improvement' category, and as a finalist, it is also put in the same category for an International Green Gown award. The UK winners are to be announced in November.

Nigel Yeo has been appointed as the new Director of Operations at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. He will take up his post on the 8th of August and will lead Battersea's staff and volunteers in providing the highest possible standards of animal welfare for its dogs and cats, as well as a first class service to all its visitors.
