Leading feline welfare charity Cats Protection is set to launch its annual Cats and Their Stats (CATS) report next month.

The largest survey of its kind, the report is expected to unveil key findings about cat welfare, including the impact of the cost of living crisis on cat owners.

Last year's report, which highlighted the impact of the pandemic on cat ownership, is available to download at cats.org.uk

Vetlife has announced its 2022 Veterinary Month of Movement (VMOM) fundraiser and is calling on members of the veterinary community to join forces, get active and raise money for the charity's vital work.

Taking place throughout October, challenges can be set independently or with friends and colleagues and can focus on completing a step or distance target, exercising everyday or simply trying out new activities.

Veterinary surgeon and Olympic silver-medalist Laura Muir scooped the gold medal in the 1500m final Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

Winning Scotland's 12th title of the games, Muir finished in four minutes 2.75 seconds, collecting her second medal in 24 hours.

Dr Muir commented on her win: "I just thought my strength is in my kick and I just tried to trust it and hope nobody would catch me. I ran as hard as I could to the line.

"It is so nice to come here and not just get one medal but two and in such a competitive field. Those girls are fast. It means a lot."

RSPB Minsmere nature reserve in Suffolk has confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on its site. The coastal nature reserve has seen an increase in dead birds recently, and has said that it is 'extremely concerned' about the potential impacts on bird populations, with 2021 and 2022 seeing the largest ever outbreak in the UK.

In a statement, RSPB said: "We appreciate that it is distressing, for both visitors and staff, to see dead or dying birds at our site but we ask that if visitors see any dead or unwell birds, they do not touch or go near them and that they report it to us at our Visitor Centre during its opening hours, or by emailing us on minsmere@rspb.org.uk outside of these times."

Following advice from its Ukrainian counterpart, the USAVA, the BSAVA is offering free overseas membership to support Ukrainian veterinary professionals.

Ukrainian veterinary professionals will have complimentary access to Congress on Demand content, and BSAVA Collections, as well as all other perks included in BSAVA membership. It is hoped that the information will help veterinary surgeons working in challenging conditions in Ukraine, support those working outside of their country for the first time, and help to keep those who are unable to work involved in the profession.

BSAVA president Sheldon Middleton said: "As an education charity we are limited in how we can utilise our funds in this situation but the USAVA told us that access to education resources would be valuable not only to vets still in Ukraine but also to so many of those who are now refugees."

A veterinary nursing student has launched a survey for her dissertation looking into the behavioural effects of long-term medical isolation in canines.

Final year Harper Adams student Amy Carter would like to hear from RVNs that have nursed a canine patient over 12 months old, admitted for a condition that warranted medical isolation for more than seven days.
